Roots grow down, not sideways. So perferably use a pot that’s deeper than it is wide.

As far as sizes go, a gallon per month is the rule of thumb I go by. We’re talking ideal conditions here though. This is to prevent the plant from getting rootbound.

In your case, I’d just go with a couple of gallon pots.
