  In an unprecedented decision, the Supreme Court has released a Tokyo man, charged with possessing hashish, on bail to allow him to take a university entrance examination.

  The 20-year-old man took an entrance examination for an art university the day after he was freed.

  Even though he failed, he expressed satisfaction about sitting the exam, and is determined to try again next year.

  A Penal Code expert hailed the decision.

  “I’ve never heard of the Supreme Court releasing a criminal defendant on bail to allow him or her to sit an entrance examination. The court seems to have taken into consideration his regret over the crime,” Aoyama Gakuin University Prof. Osamu Niikura said. “It is a well-balanced and considerate decision.”
