    Hello.

I was searching for information on a few of the new EU comissioners and how they think about prohibition and drugs. I found some comments Mrs Wallstrom made back in 1998 like “We have a brave goal—a goal of a drug-free society. We’re eager to see arguments towards drug legalisation stopped within the European Union,” and “In an ever more drug liberal world, it is essential that Sweden holds fast to its goal of a drug free society”

I didn’t find anything later than 1998 so I was wondering if she has made any statements recently that I can quote and how she compares to the “average” swedish politicians. I want to know where she stands.

Incase you are wondering, Dutch commissioner Neelie Kroes pledged to defend the Dutch coffeeshop policy in the EC if necessary.

It will be interesting to see how these two compare.

    Peace

It might help to think of it in religious terms rather then a drug policy. You’re bound to get a better understanding of sweden’s official position then. And for the record, Sweden will be drug free in less then 10 years 8)

I agree^, Prohibition is a religion. And Swedish politicians show themselves to be untolerable fundamentalist extremist.

My god, it’s not enough for these zealots to have a domestic repressive regime, they just keep bashing the Dutch DOMESTIC coffeeshop policy. Who the f___ do they think they are? Telling the Netherlands we have to change a humanist policy for what is basically a fascist policy? Can’t they show a little respect? What is wrong with Sweden?

Just keep pushing and we’re gonna have no choice but to ask Sweden to leave the EU. It’s not like they are really committed to the EU anyway, saying no to the Euro and such. Now they are making an even bigger fool of themselves.

    Quote:
Ministers laid out guidelines for measures to cut supply and demand of illegal drugs by 2012, including improving coordination both among members of the bloc and with other countries on drug trafficking routes.

But Sweden complained that the plan failed to build on an earlier agreement under which all 25 EU members would aim for equally severe punishments for drug offences across the bloc.

Countries with tougher penalties say that those with light penalties are encouraging drug use. Sweden especially has complained about the Netherlands, where coffee houses sell cannabis and other soft drugs openly.

“All states must stop and punish when people are selling drugs, even in small amounts,” Swedish Justice Minister Thomas Bodstroem told Reuters.

The EU executive Commission will draw up concrete measures in February to flesh out the broad political guidelines agreed by justice ministers on Friday.

To meet Swedish concerns, the EU added language to its drugs strategy that referred to harmonising penalties across the bloc as a valid means of combating drug trafficking.

The Netherlands is already seeking to tighten drugs laws by barring foreigners from coffee shops.

“It’s heading in that direction that wherever possible, drug tourism should be fought,” Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner told a news conference.

A trial is to be run in Maastricht, near the border with Belgium and Germany, to ban foreigners from entering coffee houses to deter them from popping into the Netherlands to buy drugs.

Seriously, Sweden should beput on notice. Stop trying to export a failed policy or leave the EU!
