  Drugs: European Strategy discussed
  Brussels, 21 April – To address the recommendations contained in the EU 2005-2012 Strategy on Drugs adopted last December (also known as Catania Report), the Committee on Public Freedoms and Internal Affairs of the EP convened several drug policy experts and activists to address some of the most encouraging aspects of the Catania Report. Among participants European Commissioner Franco Frattini, the Minister of Health of Luxembourg and the Mayor of Maastricht. Mr. Frattini stressed the need for a non-ideological approach to the matter and made himself available to develop a scientific evaluation of the current situation on drugs; Luxembourg’s Minister (Conservative) announced the opening of shooting rooms in his country. Marco Perduca, who participated on behalf of the TRP, urged a political evaluation of the impact of the three UN Conventions, on the principle of legality of European countries as well as their political implications and impact on “producing” as well as “consuming” third countries.
